Chrysler has a long history of marketing thinly veiled racecars as street cars. The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) has to be one of the most potent Mopars to ever wear a set of license plates. Dodge calls the Viper SRT10 ACR the ultimate purpose-built, street-legal track car.
From its inception in 1992, the Viper has been nothing if not outrageously quick. The current iteration can go from zero to one hundred miles per hour and back to zero in less time than the best musclecars of the sixties could make it to 100.
In a little over 12 seconds, a Viper SRT10 can go 0-100-0 mph. Zero-to-sixty mph takes less than four seconds. Quarter mile times are in the low twelves. Not only is the Viper blazingly fast, it also stops and handles like a racecar. Brembo brakes, 14-inch rotors, fully independent four-wheel suspension, adjustable coil-over racing dampers, lightweight Sidewinder forged aluminum wheels, and steamroller Michelin Pilot Sport tires all contribute to the ACR Viper’s outstanding braking and handling.
The monster Viper V-10 engine displaces 8.4 liters (510 ci) and produces 600 horsepower with 560 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission is a Tremec 6-speed. Popping the twin-disc clutch and mashing the throttle is like launching a drag racer. The torque and acceleration are incredible. Vipers aren’t cheap, but they’re still incredible performance bargains. They out-perform exotic sports cars that cost twice as much. Current prices start around $88,000 for the Viper Roadster. Add another grand for the Viper Coupe and about twelve thousand dollars for the ACR package.
The ACR package includes upgraded brakes, aerodynamics package, front and rear spoilers, sport suspension, and 295/30ZR18 front tires and 345/30ZR19 rear tires. Everything about the Viper SRT10 ACR coupe body is striking. The roof features “double bubbles,” and the adjustable rear wing looks like something from a video game. The carbon fiber wing features a clear-coated exposed weave. As wild as the body looks, the features were designed for function first – the good looks are a bonus.
The interior is all about function and weight savings, not luxury. A “Hard Core” interior package (as seen on Michael’s Viper) saves 40 pounds by eliminating the audio system, speakers, trunk carpet, and underhood silencer pad. With the Hard Core package, the Viper ACR is 80 pounds lighter than the standard Viper SRT10 coupe. Michael installed a full rollcage for safety.
It’s been over fifty years since the introduction of the 1955 Chrysler C-300, which required very little to go from the showroom floor to NASCAR winner’s circles. The Viper SRT10 ACR is the progeny of the C-300 and dozens of other Mopar high performance cars, showing that Mopars were fast then, now, and all the time in-between.
