Report: 2011 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance

The glitz, the glamour, the cars! This year was a real Duesy!

Forget everything you think you know about concours events. You know, snooty people in stuffy suits walking around sipping champagne while discussing the stock market. The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance is a world class event no doubt, but you will never find a nicer group of car nuts in any other place. You can wear your suit if you want, but nobody will fault you for showing up in jeans and a t-shirt. The Amelia Concours is just "different" in a way that is hard to describe. Where else on earth would you get a chance to see Bobby Rahal, Jack Griffith, Tommy Ivo, Don Prudhomme, Dean Jeffries, Dan Gurney, Brock Yates, Hurley Haywood, David. E. Davis, Ken Gross, Barry Meguiar, Lyn St. James, Bryan Fuller, Pete Chapouris, Bruce Meyer, and probably more that I didn't see walking around myself. These people weren't stuck behind a velvet rope; they were walking around talking to everyone!

This year Bobby Rahal was honored and a group of his former race cars were on hand. Bobby himself kicked off the event by driving one of his former cars around the show grounds, a real treat for both the fans and Rahal himself! The weather could not have been better as a blues skies and an occasional brisk breeze carried the sounds of motoring history across the fairways. This year brought one of the most diverse groups of cars I have ever seen.  Almost every corner of the automotive world was represented in one way or another. From antique Indy cars to modern hand built creations, Bill Warner’s team really outdid themselves. In the end though it was a pair of Duesenbergs that took home the Best In Show trophies. The Concours d’Elegance winner was the 1933 Duesenberg Arlington Sedan while the Sport winner was the 1935 Duesenberg “Mormon Meteor” SJ Speedster. Both cars were amazing specimens and heartily deserved the honors.
