Refining the Redesign

Normally when a vehicle undergoes modifications to its design, the terms “refresh,” or “reskin” are used. The buzz word for the new 2010 Mustang has been “refinement.” Essentially that involved upgrading the look, technology, interior, and making use of knowledge gained from the Bullitt and Ford Racing.

The powertrains available for the 2010 Mustang are a 4.0-liter V6 rated at 210 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, and a 4.6-liter V8 engine rated at 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque each is mated to a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

Horsepower gains on the V8 are the result of Ford Racing Technology’s cold-air induction system. The intake is mounted in an air box specific to the Mustang and extensive sealing modifications guarantee cold air from the front of the Mustang feeds the engine. The redline for the V8 has increased 250 rpm to 6,500. A polished-aluminum manual transmission knob and leather-wrapped shift knob support a short-throw, performance-based shifter are changes inspired by the Bullitt program.

Dual-adaptive knock calibration allows the 2010 to run on regular gas as well as premium gas and the 2010 comes with Ford’s Easy Fuel Capless Fuel Filler system. The biggest benefit of the capless system is preventing fuel vapors from escaping and reducing evaporative emissions. For those that prefer locking caps, one can be ordered to fit the system from local Ford dealers.

Ride and handling enhancements came from lessons learned from the Bullitt and Ford Racing vehicles. AdvanceTrac® traction control and anti-lock brakes are standard. Sensors are used to detect and measure yaw, or side-to-side skidding conditions, by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When wheel slippage is sensed, AdvanceTrac reduces engine torque and applies the brakes as needed. AdvanceTrac can be run on or off with the V6. In the GT, AdvanceTrac can be run in on, off, or Sport mode, which allows drivers to push it more while still retaining control. Springs, stabilizer bars and shocks were adjusted for better handling and an underhood strut tower brace was added. Tires have been increased an inch with 17-inch tires standard on the V6 and 18-inch tires standard on the GT.

The exterior has a more muscular look thanks to new headlamps and lower fascias. Aggressively angled rear corners, a sculptured decklid and prominent rear badge, give the rear end a new look. Taillights are sequential LEDs – something that would have been nice to see as original equipment on the 2005 Mustang. Moving the windshield washer jets off of the hood was a brilliant idea – no more watermarks on the hood after using them. The glassroof option will continue to be available on 2010 models.

Much time and effort was spent on the interior. The instrument panel is now made of Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) skin which surrounds genuine aluminum-finish panels. The skin was extended around the center stack creating a better appearance. The 2010 Mustang Pony emblem is stamped into an aluminum disc which graces the center of the steering wheel. The traction control and trunk release buttons also sport 2010 Mustang graphics.

Technology was given a major upgrade on the Mustang. SYNC, the award-winning in-car communications and entertainment system, developed by Ford and Microsoft allows users to control MP3 players and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones hands-free voice commands. SYNC also offers 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report features. Satellite radio and next generation navigation are available along with dual-zone temperature controls. The MyColor system features a welcome sequence which greets the driver with a sweep of the cluster needles, as well as staged halo and cluster lighting.

Realizing the amount of money spent by owners on personalization, Ford has created a long list of factory options to choose from - stripes, glassroof, several wheel options, Track Packages, and more. Buyers beware - the base price of $20,995 for the V6 coupe and $27,995 for the GT coupe will increase quickly once option boxes are checked on order forms.

The end result is a Mustang that is more “refined.” Aesthetic changes give the car a meaner and more muscular look. Driver comfort and convenience was given a major boost – the interior is much smoother. Horsepower and torque have increased and the ride has been re-engineered for better handling and balance. We have to agree with Ford, the 2010 Mustang is fast, fun, and affordable.
