Amelia Island justified its position in the premier league of US and world Concours d'Elegances with a fantastic display of cars on the fairways of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Course.
If Pebble Beach is seen as the number one concours, then Amelia Island is only a very short way behind. With its relaxed atmosphere and wonderful venue, it is certainly seen by many as their favourite concours.
The Best of Show Concours d'Elegance went to the 1931 Avoin Voisin C20 Demi Berline, although the cloud of blue smoke that erupted as it was driven to the winners area suggested that it was looks - and not mechanics - that had won the jury over.
The Best of Show Concours de Sport was awarded to the fabulous 1923 Miller Special Indy car.
Honorary Chairman David Hobbs drove onto the field at 9.30am in the 1968 Ford GT40 he raced at Le Mans and was humbled that he and his cars were part of the event, 'I can't believe I am the honouree. These cars are just incredible'.
With over 15,000 people attending the one day show, Bill Warner, commented 'The economy was down, but that does not mean we drop dead. We have to celebrate the history of the cars and there is no better way to do so than on a beautiful afternoon on Amelia Island'. Since its inception in 1995 the show's foundation has donated over .6m to the Community Hopsice of Northeast Florida and various other charities.
