Some star lots for Bonhams' first sale in Dubai.

Never let it be said that Bonhams isn’t afraid to try out new venues in order to maintain its premier position in the international auction scene. The arrival of Dubai on its calendar is certainly going to add some additional spice to what has already been an intriguing year.

The auction will be held at the Royal Mirage Hotel, and the classic cars will be an additional feature to Bonhams’ well-established Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern, Iranian & South East Asian Art auction. The company’s first Dubai auction was held in March 2008 and made more than USm, breaking 33 world records in the process.

Dubai’s art has performed well, and Bonhams is hoping to repeat the phenomenon in its Collectors’ Motor Car auction. BMW certainly believes so, and has consigned two cars from its museum reserve collection in Munich – this is the first time the company has ever offered any of its heritage models for sale by auction.

The first is a second-series 3.0CSL Batmobile that has been restored to concours condition. It is number 46/57, and its estimate is €130,000-170,000. The second is a 1979 M1 with nominal mileage in what is described as concours condition. It’s also estimated at €130,000-170,000 – making the low-production-run CSL look cheap by comparison.

Prototype and one-off cars to cross the block will include a 1993 Italdesign Aztec Barchetta at €80,000-120,000, and the love-it-or-hate-it 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Shooting Brake at €200,000-300,000.  Also on offer will be the 1980 Ferrari Pinin four-door saloon, now ready for the road after a ground-up restoration (estimate .2-1.4m).
