Collector Bob Lee scored a unique double at this year’s Monterey Week when two of his cars carried off Best of Shows at both The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Having already taken victory at The Quail with his 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B, Lee followed up with Best of Show at Pebble Beach for his 1937 Horch 853 Vol & Ruhrbeck Sport Cabriolet. The subject of a five-year restoration, the straight-eight-powered German supercar looked staggering in its silver-and-chrome finish.
Bentley achieved a unique first of its own by debuting its new Mulsanne saloon on the Pebble Beach ramp – the first time a manufacturer has been allowed to do this. It backed up its new car with a fine display of pre-war team cars – in stark contrast to a clutch of Mercedes-Benz ‘Silver Arrow’ racers.
A new departure this year for Pebble Beach was a class for motorcycles, focusing on British machines built up to 1959. Also flying the British flag was Morgan, celebrating 100 years of production with a diverse line-up of vehicles.
