Celebrate stars and their cars at the Classic Motorsports Mitty

Four-day HSR event features more than 250 vintage race cars April 29-May 2.

Some of the most important race cars ever unleashed as well as the people behind them will descend upon Road Atlanta for the upcoming Classic Motorsports Mitty presented by Mazda. Special guests at this April 29-May 2 historic race weekend will include AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson, NASCAR legend Bobby Allison, Corvette and Shelby designer Peter Brock, and Formula 5000 champion Tony Adamowicz.

The cars that these men drove—and sent—into battle will also be at the track that weekend. Lotus, supplier to so many champions, will be the weekend’s featured marque. This will also be the public’s first opportunity to sample the company’s brand-new Evora. Free rides will be available to those who have paid admission.

Other important Lotus cars on display will include the Lotus 6, the first car completely designed in-house by company founder Colin Chapman; the Lotus 30, the brand’s entry into Can-Am competition; and the Lotus 26R, the racing version of the brand’s iconic Elise sports car.

Peter Brock will serve as the event’s grand marshal. Forty years ago, the red, white and blue Datsuns bearing his BRE team logo were the scourge of SCCA amateur and professional racing. They won championships in nearly every arena contested.
The team’s success came via a relatively small fleet, as they only built a dozen or so cars during their existence. Despite the small number of cars constructed, many of those remaining will be at The Mitty, including the Trans-Am Datsun 510 once driven by NASCAR star Bobby Allison.

“As we continue in the rich tradition of The Mitty, Classic Motorsports is delighted to honor a legend such as Peter Brock,” said Classic Motorsports Publisher Tim Suddard. “In partnership with our truly amazing sponsors, the 2010 Mitty will feature a car corral of historic models unlike anyone has seen before.”

AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson has been a fixture at The Mitty for years. When he’s not headlining one of the world’s most successful rock bands, he likes to relax at the track. He’s always been eager to chat with fans, sign autographs, and recount stories about his on-track adventures. His bright yellow Royale sports racer is hard to miss.

A 20-lap feature race for historic Formula 5000 cars—open-wheel formula cars powered by thundering V8 engines—is also on the weekend’s card. Tony Adamowicz, the series’ 1969 champion, will return to The Mitty to drive the same Gurney Eagle he piloted to that title.

“I’m looking forward to returning to Road Atlanta to compete in The Mitty,” Adamowicz said. “This will be the first time the Riverside International Automotive Museum Gurney Eagle will compete and join the rest of the Formula 5000 cars at Road Atlanta—the gateway to premier road racing in the East.” Their Sunday race will feature some 20 entries, including the Lola T332 that Brian Redman drove to a 1976 championship.

The four-day Historic Sportscar Racing event will also feature more than 250 other race cars, including such famous makes as Porsche, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Cobra, Fiat, Lancia, Lola, Corvette, Datsun, Mustang and Austin-Healey.

Spectators get to do more than just watch at The Mitty, as the infield’s Speedfest provides several hands-on, behind-the-scenes activities. Free “spirited” test drives in new Mazda MX-5s are available courtesy of Kumho Tires, while Classic Motorsports will host several paddock tours—it’s the perfect opportunity to meet drivers and see the cars up close. Mazda owners are invited to a free party Friday evening; just show a Mazda key to get in.

More than 20 car clubs, including ones catering to fans of Jaguar, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Cobra, Lotus and Fiat-Lancia, will fill the track’s infield.

About The Mitty: The Mitty is the oldest and largest historic car race on the East Coast. It’s held annually at Road Atlanta, one of the premier road circuits in the U.S. For more information about the exciting HSR-sanctioned race weekend, go to Advance tickets start at $20, while admission can also be purchased at the gate. The track is located at 5300 Winder Highway in Braselton, Georgia.

About Peter Brock: Peter Brock joined GM’s design studio while still a teen-ager, and at 19 he drew the initial design for the 1963 Corvette, one of the most iconic cars ever built. He eventually worked for Shelby, and the Le Mans-winning Cobra Daytona Coupe is among his designs. In the late 1960s, he approached the then-fledgling Datsun about launching a race program. Between 1968 and 1972, the team was unstopped and gave Datsun a national title just about every year.

Brock will be available for autographs all weekend, while a dinner celebrating his achievements will take place Thursday. Dinner tickets for the public are available online at
