Another steller year for the Amelia Island show.

It was a beautiful early spring day on the Georgia coast. The breeze was blowing strongly from the sea only a few hundred yards away and the dew was thick on the green grass of the Golf Club Of Amelia Island At Summer Beach. Since dawn the sounds of machinery have filled the air. These are not just any sounds though; these are the sounds of history and time in motion. From shrill 12-cylinder unfettered racing engines to the almost melodic hit-and-miss single cylinder horseless carriages, they are all making their way to the show field. A finer day couldn't have been ordered for the 15th Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. The field of over 250 automobiles spread out along the fairways and curved along the lake of the golf course. The Honorary Chairman for the day was none other than Richard Petty, who was honored with a class for just his historic race cars. Mr. Petty rang in the event by driving his '71 Plymouth Roadrunner from the awards circle to its place among his other famous race cars. It was not unusual to hear an engine starting as the automobile owners were glad to show off their prized possessions.

The judges worked their way through the cars taking time to speak with each owner and inspect the ever important documentation. With all the judging done the Best of Show Concours d’Elegance was won by the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster owned by Sam and Emily Mann’s, and the Best of Show Concours de Sport was won by the 1960 "Birdcage" Maserati Tipo 61 owned by Jonathan Feiber.
