This year marks the beginning of a new spring tradition, the Spring Turkey Run! Previously known as the Daytona Spring Car Show, the fall Turkey Run has proven so successful that the same format has been applied to the annual spring show. While not as large as the fall show (yet) the Spring Turkey Run drew over 3,000 cars this year for three days of fun. With a huge amount of space available at the Daytona International Speedway there was more than enough room for everything the show organizers had planned. Along with the gigantic car show, an almost as large car corral was always a hotbed of activity. It was quite common to see the word "SOLD" written across a windshield and a smiling new owner behind the wheel. The spectrum of vehicles on display and for sale really ran the gamut, from showroom stock to over the top customs. And then there was the swap meet. If you needed it, there was probably somebody in the swap meet selling it. From project cars to ratchet straps there is still a lot to be said for a good old fashioned swap meet for parts scrounging.
Friday and Sunday were fantastic weather-wise but Saturday was cut short due to a fast moving rainstorm that left attendees dashing for cover and participants struggling to attach car covers in the downpour. But this is Florida and rain is always a threat, so show goers didn't seem to let this little inconvenience ruin their weekend. The weekend was capped off by a few laps around historic Daytona International Speedway. Show participants were invited to take a parade lap round the track. For safety sake speed was kept to around 25mph and the route did not venture onto the famed high banked turns. For those who have never piloted a car around a high banked oval, unless you are carrying a good bit of speed it is actually quite difficult to stay on the corner, if at all. So keeping things on the flat part of the track was a wise decision.
In the end it seems that the organizers have done a great thing here. The success of the original Turkey Run was something too good to keep to one event. By brining on a spring show they have taken the original magic and spread it around a little. There are those of us that just can't be at a car show over a holiday, so having a chance to attend this great show was truly a welcome experience.
