A focus on Toyota
The first Toyotas appeared a few years before the Second World War, but real production only got underway once the conflict was over. Early designs were often American-inspired; hardly surprising as the company had started exporting its substantial Crown to that country in 1957.
European sales kicked off in 1962, with the Corona and Corolla all proving healthy money-generators for the Japanese marque. Particularly notable models have been the remarkable Toyota 2000 sportscar, the mid-engined MR2 and the Mustang-pretender Celica. The company today is the world’s largest auto maker, with many factories throughout the globe, and claims its long-running Corolla range to be the world’s biggest-selling car, with over 30-million sold.
