OVERVIEW

1979 Pontiac Trans Am

  • DESCRIPTIONI purchased this car in November 2006 from a friend that owns a car dealership. He had began restoring it and quit to work on other projects. The car had been professionally repainted at his Body Shop and the interior was removed. The car needed minor repairs that I did myself including a new radiator, starter, coil and pickup in the distributor, front brake calipers, pads, lines and a new speedometer gear on transmission. The engine has been completely rebuilt and is very strong and smooth. The a/c compressor, dryer and condensor core is new. I still need a line and blower motor to finish the a/c. The interior was in much need of repair but not as bad as some I have seen. The dash pad and console are original and in excellent condition, no splits or cracks. I replaced the carpet, door panels, console lid, gear shift plate, door sill plates, rear upper, and lower sail panels, and steering wheel that was purchased from Trans Am Specialties. I put on new decals from Phoenix Graphics. My Dad owns a paint and body shop so I learned to do this kind of work from him. the bird on the hood has no bubbles and lays very smooth. It has Flowmaster exhaust system with new quad chrome tips. This car runs and drives very smooth and strong. I also have the orginial Bill Of Sale, Dealer Invoice, Build Sheet, Stereo and Tire paperwork that came with the car new. Also the Owners Manual. I have owned other Firebirds in the past from 1978 - 1994. They were a 1978 Formula, 1978 Gold SE T/A, 1979 T/A, 1984 T/A, 1988 T/A, and 1989 Formula. The car needs detailing under the hood and underneath. but looks good as it is. I work on it when time and money allows. This is a family project with my wife and two sons. my 3 1/2 year old Grandaughter LOVES the 'Twansam' with 'Fibud' on the hood. Update 6/3/12, I have made some modifications to the engine that have really improved performance and maintained stock appearance and drivability. We installed a set of 1970 #6 heads from a Olds Rocket 350 raising the compression ratio to 10:1 from 8:1. Had machine shop put in the 2.0 in. intake valves from 403, My dads auto shop ported and polished, installed 214/224 472/496 cam and 800 cfm street strip carb from Summit Racing. Car has much more torque and horsepwer. I have not raced or timed the car but i really think she will run a high 13 sec 1/4. We also had heads plained .15. Perfect Mod to give the car the performance it should have using some stock olds parts.
