OVERVIEW

1957 Ferrari 250

  • DESCRIPTION1957Ferrari 250 GT "Tour de France" Competition Berlinetta The Tour de France, covering 5 days and 3,300 miles was a race which Ferrari dominated with his 250 3 Litre LWB Berlinettas. Comprised of both open road rally stages, six circuit races, two hill climbs and a 500 meter drag race, the Tour demanded speed and reliability, from the cars. In 1956, only 37 of 103 starters finished. The winner was the stylish Marquis de Portago driving one the first versions of the LWB Berlinetta, #0557. Clothed by Scaglietti in a similar fashion to Pinin Farina's 250 and 375 Mille Miglia. These first 10 cars were different than all subsequent TdF's with their large rear wrap around window and no louvers on the side panels. By winning, the car model became eligible to use the races evocative title. Incidentally, de Portago's car was even equipped with a radio. Sterling Moss was 2nd, driving a factory-backed 300SL; In 1957, Oliver Gendebien, in #0677, a works car with the best racing history of any TdF, repeated de Portago's win, Gendebien's car was one of the 10, 14 Louver cars with the smaller rear window allowing a sail panel that accommodated the louvers which became the feature differentiating the 5 series of TdF's. The 14 Louver cars were followed in mid-57 by a series of 15 3-louver cars with new, set back covered headlights. These were followed by 29 cars, now with single louvers, but also all with covered headlights, of which this car is the last of that series. Finally 8 single louver cars were built in 1959 with open headlights as required by new Italian law. There were also 5 TdF's bodies by Zagato, So these Scaglietti built 250 LWB Berlinettas, became one of the most coveted Ferrari's due to their great racing history and attractive styling.
